Apple Pie

Ingredients

  • CRUST

  • Shortcrust Pastry [link]

  • FILLING

  • 6 Granny Smith apples

  • Juice of 1 lemon (to do: how much is this in mL?)

  • 1/4 cup sugar

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 3 tbsp flour

  • CRUMBLE

  • 3/4 cup Oats

  • 3/4 cup Flour

  • 3/4 cup butter or shortening

  • 3/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Method

  • For the crust:
  • Follow the crust recipe, chill the dough.
  • For the filling:
  • Juice lemon, put juice in big bowl.
  • Peel apples. After peeling, toss into big bowl
  • Cut apples into 1/4 inch thick slices. Half em, then chop with flat side down. Or chop into more typical slices?
  • Sift together sugar, salt, and flour.
  • Toss peeled, sliced apples with juice (remove some if you don't want too much lemon flavor), and then toss in the sifted sugar mixture.
  • Set apple mixture aside.
  • For the crumble:
  • Cream the butter or shortening.
  • Sift together the sugar, salt, and spices.
  • Cream the sugar mixture into the butter
  • Add the flour into the butter mixture, cream together (should probably get a bit meal-y?)
  • Add the oats into the butter mixture, stir till combined (should get a bit loose, like coarse sand).
  • Assembly and baking:
  • Preheat oven to 375˚.
  • Roll out pie crust. Spread over pie cooking thing.
  • Add in apple mixture (well, you can do the crust first, then work on the apple mix to keep it fresh).
  • Add crumble overtop (crumble is good to prep in advance, and refrigerate so it's easier to "crumble")
  • Bake at 375˚ for .... 30 mins? (Total guess, need to test that timing, may be closer to 45 mins).
